MAMUIL MALAL
As authentic and unique an estancia experience as they come, with private access to 15 miles of the Malleo.
A family affair with astonishing scenery and river access.
The truly unique Mamuil Malal offers guests the chance to live as the gauchos do. This is a working estancia home with bags of character and history, run by the charismatic Bertil and Dolores Ghran, the fourth generation of their family to call this estancia home. Rather than a traditional lodge set up, guests are welcomed like family into the literal family home, to share the same roof and dining table as the hosts and owners.
Bertil spends his days herding his cattle, hunting deer or wild boar or breeding his prize polo ponies, which are regularly deployed in matches on the estancia‘s very own cancha de polo (polo field). This provides an unforgettable setup to experience some of the best fishing in the area, whether on the Malleo river or nearby lakes, in a breathtakingly beautiful setting at the foot of the towering Lanín volcano close to the border with Chile.
Fishing
Mamuil Malal has private access to 15 miles of the Upper Malleo complete with its fabulous pools and extraordinary views of the Lanín volcano, along with unbeatable trout fishing.
Aside from the larger Malleo, Mamuil Malal has its own private spring creek, which offers spectacular wading and dry flies in the cool waters.
In addition, the lodge is also very close to Lake Tromen which lies just a 10 minute drive away, providing an ideal location for those wishing to throw some lakes into the mix.
Accommodation
Located about 45 minutes from Chapelco airport, Mamuil Malal is one of the most unique fishing lodges you could ever hope to stay in. It’s less of a lodge, and more of an authentic Patagonian family home open to a select group of guests. It’s not every outfitter who goes here: our Head Guide and Founder Peter has known the Grahns since he started fishing there 20 years ago.
This is the place for those looking to experience life on a true Patagonian estancia, literally sharing the table with the family. The guest accommodation is charmingly homely and traditional, and is in fact literally in the family home, a storey beneath the family’s private quarters. Only 8 guests can be accommodated at any one time, in 4 ensuite bedrooms. The shared family dining room and lounge are a cosy place to kick back after a day on the river.
There are few opportunities to experience Argentinian hospitality and culture on this intimate a level, but it’s not for those looking for a formal lodge experience.
Dining
Food at Mamuil Malal is, in keeping with the rest of the experience, hearty and authentic. Homemade, traditional food is served at the family table, where you share dinners with Bertil and Dolores and gain an unbeatable insight into life on Patagonian estancias.
In addition, a newly converted ex-cider press provides a stunning rustic al fresco bar.
Off the water
Although a working estancia, Mamuil Malal opens its doors for fishing only. For that reason, it’s a place best enjoyed by those there to fish, fish, and fish some more.
