SAN HUBERTO LODGE

A famed local institution since 1976, San Huberto Lodge in Argentina offers superlative fishing with private access to the famous Malleo River.

Decades of experience and exemplary fishing.

San Huberto Lodge was established in 1976 by Carlos and Carmen Olsen. It has remained in the Olsen family ever since, and has become synonymous with Northern Patagonian fly fishing. Situated on the 24,000-acre family run estancia, the lodge has been a firm favourite with return guests for decades. Serving home-grown food and boasting 25 miles of privileged access along the Malleo River, San Huberto is so widely renowned for a reason.

Fishing.

San Huberto Lodge is best known and best-loved for its exceptional position right on the famed trout waters of the Malleo River. With 25 miles of private access to the river for wading, San Huberto is a mecca for both dry fly fishing and sight fishing.

Welcoming no more than 12 anglers at a time, San Huberto retains its reputation for exclusive and high quality fly fishing.

Aside from the Malleo River, this lodge is also a great location from which to fish the Aluminé River and Tromen Lake, both a short drive away. Without even having to leave the property, guests also have access to the Huaca Mamuil creek, which can provide even more exceptional dry fly and sight fishing.

Accommodation.

The lodge at San Huberto was renovated in 1999 and provides comfortable lodging that can accommodate up to 16 guests across 4 single and 6 double rooms. The lodge has a spacious shared lounge in which to relax after a long day on the water, alongside a well-stocked bar, a hot tub and an excellent quincho for sharing mouth-watering asados.

As part of a working, family-run estancia with a small herd of cattle, San Huberto is an authentic slice of Northern Patagonia.

The lodge is just a 45 minute drive from Chapelco airport (which serves San Martín de los Andes), making it easily accessible and a great first stop on arrival in Argentina.

Dining.

All the food at San Huberto is prepared by the current owner Ronnie, the son of founders Carlos and Carmen Olsen. Ingredients mostly come from the estancia itself, from the organic vegetables to the free-range beef and lamb.

Sundays at San Huberto are the revered asado days, well worth planning your trip around. Asados are the famed Argentinian barbecue experience, often encompassing beef, lamb, empanadas, salads and incredible Malbecs for guests to enjoy.

Off the water.

Alongside its on-site hot tub and massage facilities, San Huberto offers plenty of activities for the non-angler. Most of these take place off-site, including horse riding, birdwatching and trekking in the neighbouring Lanín National Park.

This park is home to the iconic Lanín Volcano, a popular attraction for guests. Non-anglers can also enjoy the nearby Chapelco golf course, which boasts stunning views and a course designed by Jack Nicklaus.

FAQs about San Huberto Lodge in Argentina.

To provide clarity on any questions you may have, we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions below.

What species can I expect to catch in the Malleo River?

The Malleo River is well-known for its large population of rainbow and brown trout, averaging around 17cm in size. The river also contains a small population of brook trout due to the river’s healthy ecosystem and natural food sources, such as minnows and insects.

When is the fishing season at San Huberto Lodge?

The fishing season in Northern Patagonia runs from November to May.

When is the best time of year to fish at San Huberto Lodge?

There’s truly no bad time to fish at San Huberto Lodge, as each month of the season offers a unique experience in Patagonia. Part of the reason the Malleo River is so widely renowned is its consistency. Probably the best blue wing olive hatches are around March and April, while December and January provide some great caddis, stonefly and some baetis mayfly hatches.

What kind of fishing will I be doing from San Huberto Lodge?

San Huberto is renowned for its wading, sight fishing and exceptional conditions for dry flies. But part of the Malleo’s charm is its versatility: we also know the best pools for throwing streamers and nymphing during the heat of summer, when there’s less action on the surface. The Malleo River is wading only, but the Aluminé River and Tromen Lake are also within reach of the lodge. There, we use drift boats to float the Aluminé or motor boats to fish the lake.

How do I get to San Huberto Lodge?

The nearest airport is Chapelco Airport, which serves San Martín de los Andes. Upon arrival, your ground transportation is organised by the Fish Patagonia team. We’ll be there to greet you off your flight and take you straight to the lodge.

There are multiple short daily flights to Chapelco during the fishing season from Buenos Aires, which take only around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Buenos Aires itself receives plenty of daily international flights from all around the world, so reaching Patagonia will likely be a lot quicker than you think.

If you need assistance getting to the lodge, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

What should I pack for my trip to Patagonia?

While we provide essential fishing equipment, plenty of layered clothing, sunscreen and hats are recommended. Well before your trip, we’ll be in touch to share our recommended packing list.

Do I need to bring my own flies and fishing equipment?

No: we provide all the flies and fishing equipment you’ll need. We also supply top of the range Loop fishing rods and reels, as well as floating and sinking tip lines: whatever you can think of, we’ve got it covered.

What is the catch-and-release policy at San Huberto Lodge?

On the Malleo River, as with every river we fish in Northern Patagonia, all of the fishing is catch and release. This sustainable policy allows anglers to enjoy exceptional fly fishing while contributing to the conservation of rainbow and brown trout in this corner of Patagonian paradise.
