Tipiliuke Lodge is truly one of the best in the business, a place so enchanting it keeps guests coming back year after year. Forming part of Estancia Tipiliuke, the lodge is located at the heart of a 50,000-acre cattle ranch in Neuquén province. Little has changed since the property was founded in 1909 by the French-Argentine family who still own it today, the de Larminats.
While enjoying your riverside picnic or floating down the Chimehuín River, there’s every chance you’ll come across some gauchos driving cattle across the same water, or a resident stag stopping by for a drink. The lodge itself has been running for over 25 years, and it shows. The service – whether you’re enjoying a lunchtime asado, hiking the estancia with a guide, or exploring on horseback with a gaucho – is top-notch to go along with the fly fishing.
Fishing.
Based a stone’s throw from the birthplace of fly fishing in Argentina, Junín de los Andes, Tipiliuke offers exceptional trout fishing in keeping with the history of its location. Over 9 miles of the charming Chimehuín River run through the property, which also boasts a stretch of the Quilquihue River. This gives Tipiliuke access to some of the best wading in Northern Patagonia, along with some excellent floating opportunities and private river access. The populations of both brown trout and rainbow trout are plentiful and make for unforgettable fly fishing.
The lodge’s proximity to the Chimehuín River means guests spend as little as five, and never more than 15, minutes in the truck to fish within the property. In addition to the waters within its borders, Tipiliuke’s location is ideal for fishing many other rivers and lakes in the area for the day, including the Collón Curá, Malleo, Aluminé or Falkner.
The Chimehuin River is one of the most consistent in Patagonia and offers excellent conditions for fishing all through the season.
Accommodation.
Tipiliuke Lodge is undoubtedly one of the best in Argentina. Hosts Kevin and Mary Jo are beloved by all for their wonderful hospitality and welcoming nature, setting the tone for their whole team.
Recently redecorated, it’s looking better than ever. Sleeping up to 16 rods, guest suites are spacious and immaculate. The communal lounge, well-stocked bar and dining room are tastefully modern yet relaxed and welcoming.
Guests have access to a hot tub, wood-burning sauna, yoga studio, and spa treatment rooms. Tipiliuke is surrounded by exceptionally landscaped gardens which offer plenty of outdoor seating areas around the lodge to relax while taking an afternoon siesta, while the outdoor fire is a favourite for stargazing after dinner on a clear night.
Dining.
It is impossible to go hungry at Tipiliuke. Local chef Eva has been cooking for the family who own the estancia since her youth, and at the lodge since it opened. She is an institution: guests come back to Tipiliuke for Eva just as much as for the fishing. Nearly everything is made in-house, from the yoghurt at breakfast to the bread that comes with your three-course picnic by the river.
The menu is simple and authentic to Patagonia, with a focus on in-season ingredients. Fish is often on the menu, and vegetarian options are excellent. Tipiliuke does its best to ensure every guest has the opportunity to sample one of their asados, an indulgent multi-course meat banquet served at lunchtime and an Argentine classic.
Lunches and dinners are accompanied by an assortment of quality beers and wines from Argentina, regularly changing throughout your stay.
Off the water.
Tipiliuke is a great lodge for non-anglers or anglers looking to experience any of the variety of other activities in Patagonia besides fishing. The lodge offers horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking and bird watching across the estancia all through the season, while the river itself has some lovely swimming spots. Our co-founder Holly also lives on the ranch and is one of the gauchos who manage the resident 4,000 cattle, so she is always happy to guide our guests riding when she’s finished with the morning’s herding.
Tipiliuke can also organise visits from local experts to offer massages, physical therapy sessions, yoga classes, wine tasting, tango classes, cooking sessions with Eva…the list goes on. The lodge’s proximity to San Martín de los Andes means a trip to town for the afternoon can be easily arranged, which is a lovely way to get a feel for Patagonia outside the ranch.
Tipiliuke is a mere 20 minutes from the Jack Nicklaus golf course Chapelco, which offers an additional form of sport off the water for golfing enthusiasts.
